This book 📖 gives a portrayal of the actual Aaron Burr, not just the villainous foil that he is readily characterized as . Burr was a sophisticated, brilliant, and progressive man. He had no one left to burnish his legacy and so his accomplishments are forgotten. His career suffered from the duplicitous handiwork of Jefferson. The reality of the infamous duel with Hamilton is far more complicated than the popular narrative. Burr was a courageous Patriot, brilliant lawyer and advocate for the working class. Burr and his beloved wife Theodosia were true Feminists. Author Nancy Isenberg has given Burr a place on the stage with the Founding Fafhers which he deserves.

Aaron Burr is a difficult subject for any biographer. This biography of him is quite well researched and carefully analyzed. Of course Isenberg is clearly biased in favor of her subject, but this is not a bad thing. She has done a good job dredging up correspondence, memoirs and official documents relevant to the life of Burr. Nonetheless at the end of the book Burr continues to be a somewhat shadowy and controversial figure. The reader is presented with pieces of the complex mosaic that was Aaron Burr, but they don't necessarily fit together. This not so much Isenberg's fault as it is Burr's, who seemed to delight in being enigmatic.A few pieces of the Burr mosaic do throw some light as to who he really was:* He was very much a product of the 18th Century, the Age of Enlightenment and trained himself to exercise logical thought independent of emotions;* He was loyal and loving husband who married a remarkable woman that he treated not only as a wife, but as a friend and advisor;* He was above all very pragmatic and not only embraced the Utilitarian Philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, but befriended the philosopher as well;* He was a very articulate and effective lawyer who often used creative approaches to winning legal cases based on a detailed knowledge of the law..On the other hand, as Isenberg, implies, Burr was devious, cunning, and extremely ambitious. His famous rivalry with Alexander Hamilton that ended with the fatal duel in 1804 was an almost an inevitable consequence when two highly ambitious, intelligent and strong willed men are brought into contact. In discussing the relationship between the two men one has the impression that Isenberg feels she must traduce the memory of Alexander Hamilton to rehabilitate Burr. This is unnecessary. Hamilton was a brilliant and important contributor to the establishment of a viable and independent America. His undoubted contribution by no means lessens Burr's role in making the early republic work. The role of Thomas Jefferson in Burr's downfall probably will never be adequately understood or explained. The same is true of Burr's behavior after the duel. His perhaps treasonous plan for the then Western States and his some what confusing plans for armed excursions into what was then Spanish Territories appear forever shrouded in mystery. In the end one can only conclude from this book that Aaron Burr was very complex man whose intelligence was sometimes trumped by overweening ambition and perhaps arrogance.

Fascinating book with great detail about the life of a brilliant man and American Founder.

This book gives a refreshing "warts and all" look at the Founders who are often mythologized and over-idealized, while giving an enlightening look at an important historical person who has received a very bad press,

I had read the biography of Alexander Hamilton, in which Aaron Burr played a large part. I didn't know very much about Aaron Burr, except that he shot Hamilton and had quite a reputation as a womanizer. Fallen Founder: The Life of Aaron Burr supplied all the information that I was looking for. It covered his entire life and explained why he and Hamilton held a duel and why he shot Hamilton, something that would change the rest of his life. Burr was an accomplished lawyer, a happily married man, and unfortunately had the ill-fate to be born at the same time as Hamilton. Each were good men, but had different views about politics and the manner to carry out the development of our new country. For someone wanting to know more about Aaron Burr, I would highly recommend this book.

What a book!! A warning to the wary, the author, Nancy Isenberg takes every single controversy from Aaron Burr's life from his point of view, trying her best to make the reader sympathize with him. Not that she doesn't have many good points to make in this respect, trying to rehabilitate his reputation, but at some point you just start wondering if she's gone off the deep end.I think she succeeds in painting Burr as a respectable person early on in life. She does a nice job fleshing out Burr's respectable upbringing, his education at Princeton (where his father, with the same name, was president), his role in the Revolutionary War, and his involvement in New York state politics, including a stint as a New York senator, but then loses it when she tries to paint him as `forthright" during the controversial contested Election of 1800. She also tries to absolve him of any responsibility in the Hamilton duel, and then goes on for perhaps a hundred pages trying to justify Burr's innocence of doing anything wrong, much less commit treason, during Burr's attempt set up a break away republic in the West. From the very start, Isenberg's introductory pages go on and on about how misunderstood Burr has been through the ages, so much so the she sounds more like a preacher than a professor. To be sure it is good to have this book out there as a reference, though I think you would be missing something if this were the only book on Burr you read. This book reminded me very much of Merrill Peterson's gold standard on Jefferson, always taking Jefferson's side of things, though now Jefferson is much out of vogue in favor of Hamilton, so several sections in Peterson sounded off target.Anyway, Isenberg also explores several interesting aspects of Burr's personal life, particularly his enlightened attitudes towards women, his relationship with his wife and daughter, and his exceptional academic abilities. Having said all that, I do think she does succeed to some degree in painting Burr as a very capable person whose life got derailed by angering two very powerful men, Hamilton and Jefferson. What do you think?? Am I on target?? And why is the book reduced from $29 to $7??

What a thrilling, gripping, exciting story! This book is hard to put down. once you start it. This book offers you another perspective and builds your faith as you read the dramatic story. A real bonus is there were some uplifting, encouraging messages weaved into the story to help anybody going through a challenging time and having to trust God, rather than being tormented by the circumstances and the enemy's messages.

What a powerful book very intense I am always praying for children in my prayer time. This book just brought it home even in the most of despair, abuse, sadness, our faith wavering, God is still in control. Great read, I highly recommend this book no matter what you're going through never lose your joy, and faith in God, truly all thing work together for good. I was hoping for a sequel I wanted Terri, to find the Lord again and Dennis, get his life together his character was hilarious, I was hoping in the next book there's father get free from prison this book is to good to end it like this, so happy Angel return home but want to see there's dad come home. Great read. Theresa

I loved this book, it was not only well written it held my attention throughout the whole book. Some scriptures that were used opened my eyes spiritually and I thank God that He meets people where they are. This book was not just read as entertainment but I relearned some things that I had let slide by the wayside. As with all the books that I have read by Eric M Hill, as long as I read with an open mind, I learn something. Thanks for using your talents to inspire by sharing things that you have witnessed in life. I cannot wait for the next book.

This book is totally riveting. It’s hard to put down. You must read it you will not be disappointed. Excellent author I will purchase more from Eric.

This book was not only suspenseful but inspirational. Every time I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down. I've read several of Mr. Hill's books and I've never been disappointed. I would definitely recommend this book to read. Awesome!

I have read, I think, all of Eric M Hill’s books, and this is yet another great read.He uses the three sisters to confront very real modern evil criminal acts that plague our communities as well having them work through their own dilemmas —spiritual, psychological, and emotional; problems that affect many of us as well. Their tackling of current societal issues give the story a relevance to our world; but the book comes together in a way to show that no matter what we have gone through, God’s plans for love and grace are there. A gritty detective novel that will keep you excitement going to the end. Fair warning, if you start to read this you won’t be able to stop ‘til it’s over!

I could not put this book down. This is my first time reading a book by this author and I am hooked. From the first page the story drew me in not only with the drama, but with the realness of the chatacters responses. The well placed use of scripture was encouraging. I loved how each sister had their own degree of faith and their inner struggles because of the lack of trust in God. Through it all I could see and God's love covering them. Needless to say I've found a new author and I'm looking forward to reading all that he has already written and all that is to come.

I enjoyed these sisters! They all were different, but strong in their own way. Child kidnapping and sex trafficking is real regardless of race and we have to be careful and prayerful over our children,

Gastrophysics: The New Science of Eating, by Charles Spence

Review

“A chatty whirl through the latest discoveries and their real-world applications, roughly organized by the five senses and different dining situations, Mr. Spence’s book is far from a systematic treatise on gastrophysics.” —Wall St Journal   “[A] delicious explainer” —Real Simple   "Fascinating...[Spence] considers everything from marketing and cognitive neuroscience to design and behavioral economics to get the scoop on how our brains process the food on our plate."—PureWow“Spence has a light touch and a knack for framing research questions in provocative headings: 'What's the link,' he asks, 'between the humble tomato and aircraft noise?' It's a question worth pondering should you have the dubious pleasure of being served an in-flight meal, just as you'll learn here why the barista at Starbucks puts your name on the cup (hint: it's not really a memory aid for said barista). A sharp, engaging education for food consumers and a font of ideas for restaurateurs and chefs as well."—Kirkus “If simply changing the name of a dish on a menu or the color of the plate on which it is served can dramatically alter our perception of taste and food quality, then everyone in the restaurant industry needs to read this and take a deeper look at the scientific secrets Professor Spence reveals in Gastrophysics.”—Larry Olmsted, New York Times bestselling author of Real Food, Fake Food: What You Don’t Know About What You’re Eating & What You Can Do About It“Popular science at its best. Insightful, entertainingly written and peppered throughout with facts you can use in the kitchen, in the classroom, or in the pub."—Daniel J. Levitin, New York Times bestselling author of The Organized Mind and This Is Your Brain on Music“Spence allows people to appreciate the multisensory experience of eating.”—The New Yorker   “Not many people are as ready to realize the importance of the senses as Charles Spence.”—Ferran Adrià, El Bulli restaurant, Spain  “Can’t fail to entertain, inform, and dazzle.”—Heston Blumenthal, The Fat Duck restaurant, UK“A fascinating look at the science of food and how our perception is shaped by all our senses, not just taste.”—Sunday Times (UK)“Gastrophysics serves up a mind-bending menu of fascinating insights.”—Observer (UK)

If this description of a Futurist meal appeals to you (on any level) you might like this book:"Pieces of olive, fennel, and kumquat are eaten with the right hand while the left hand caresses various swatches of sandpaper, velvet, and silk. At the same time, the diner is blasted with a giant fan (preferably an airplane propeller) and nimble waiters spray him with the scent of carnation, all to the strains of a Wagner opera."I was not amused, especially when each of the many meals and techniques described in Gastromania seemed designed to see if it could be more extreme than the last! The description of the book from the publisher stressed science, and there was some of that sprinkled through, but there was WAY too much of the bizarre and often obscenely overpriced and pretentious. Even when some science or at least fact-finding was mentioned, too often the mention was not very informative. For example, the author cited that Pizza Hut UK was able to increase customer purchases by an average of more than 20% by a big data analysis project. This piqued my interest, but he never told us what they found out! My inquiring mind is much more interested in that than in descriptions like the meal above. In addition, some of the science is simply wrong. For example, in the discussion of supertasters , the author says that supertasting is associated with a liking for bitter-tasting foods. According to the lecture I attended at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting a few years ago, that is the exact opposite of their preference---the extra papillae on their tongues make them so sensitive they cannot tolerate too strong a bitter flavor.I had high hopes for the book and did pick up a few nice tidbits, like the term “anosmia”, which is an inability to smell some volatile chemical or other, but ultimately Gastrophysics was just not to my taste.

I'm loving this book and I haven't even finished it yet. My husband may not like it since several times a day I'm telling him something interesting I read in this book. But I think in the end he will love it since I'm applying some of the interesting things I've learned to make my own homecooked food "taste" better! Did you know choosing the right plate, or silverware, background music, or food arrangement can make your food taste better! And so many other interesting facts. I love learning, I love food, I love learning about how we "tick" through the combination of physiology and psychology and this book gives an interesting meld of it all with research and science and really easy to read!

Ordered as gift for professional chef. He loved the book.

Gastrophysics is a manual for restaurants. It lays out in very precise terms how to affect the meal, the satisfaction, enjoyment and memorability of the event. The advice comes from Charles Spence’s day job, running a gastrophysics lab in Oxford, where human guinea pigs give up their secrets – secret from themselves mostly. Things like how the shape of plates or their tint affect the experience. Why airline food tastes less than fabulous (there are four very good reasons). How rotating the plate changes the entire impression of the meal. How spraying food fragrances warms up the audience. How the sound of crispness changes our attitude. How the weight of cutlery changes our impression. How putting up a sign (Italy Week) and using red checkered tablecloths make diners think the same Italian menu items from always are suddenly fresher and more authentic. How eating off a tablet computer screen (as a plate) allows for a background video to complement the food.Who knew the act of eating could be so complex? Every one of the five senses plays major role in our experience. Each one gets its own chapter to start the book off in a highly detailed and instructive, not to say addictive manner. Smell works in two areas – before the food enters the mouth and at the back of the throat. Smell alone has a direct connection to the brain, giving it by far the most influence on our appreciation. Taste, by comparison, is a weakling limited to five sensations. Food in motion (bacon sizzling, cheese flowing, yolks oozing) is a proven irresistible visual in advertising. There are endless experiments restaurants have tried. In order to get everyone in a good mood, one placed mooing cylinders (and nothing else) on its tables. With nothing else to fiddle with, people picked them up, tilted them, and they mooed, quickly causing everyone in the room to do the same, with resultant universal laughter. Controlling the setting is critical, which is why some high end places make you drive 50 miles out of town, and others in the city center allow no windows at all. All these and hundreds more factors are proven motivators of the palate.Unfortunately, we don’t remember food as much as the experience. We remember the setting, the service, the lighting, and the comfort better than the food itself. This is frustrating for super chefs, and they constantly to try to improve the memorability factor, not with the food, but with sideshows. In a nod back at supper clubs with floor shows, they use gimmicks like mp3 players, aroma sprays, live musicians, motorized dessert carts and robot servers to make the event memorable. This leads to a problem with the book: the last third is all about these extraneous attempts to make events memorable, well outside the scope of gastrophysics. The potential of battery-operated forks and fur-covered spoons is beyond. Another problem with Gastophysics is that it is mostly about the superrich restaurateurs. Spence loves citing world-renown establishments, constantly and repeatedly. The kind of places that charge upwards of £300/$400 (and up to £1000) for a set tasting. They are his peeps. But they are the exception. Also, the many soft, black and white images are less than appetizing. Finally, Spence has a nasty habit of overusing exclamation points! Oddly for a scientist so finely attuned to the subtleties of fine tuning, their use is confusing and distracting! The overall impression is overwhelming, making Gastrophysics a go-to reference for the food industry. And yes, you can and should try these things at home.David Wineberg

Spence allows his sense of humor to shine through as he highlights this emerging field targeting both fine dining and that of each of us in our own cultural realm of eating. Certainly, not everyone will embrace these trends, but if you are in the industry, one needs to be aware of their composite and direction. At the very least, it will expand one's appreciation of the science of eating.

100% 😍😍

The Reef: A Passionate History: The Great Barrier Reef from Captain Cook to Climate Change, by Iain McCalman

From Booklist

Flat-out astonished when he first set eyes on the Great Barrier Reef in 2001, British historian McCalman (Darwin’s Armada, 2009) quickly became concerned about all that imperils the ongoing vitality of this gigantic maze of coral structures and magnificent marine world, especially global warming. Now his mission is to illuminate the reef’s glorious complexity by recounting the stirring, wild, and surprising stories of fraught encounters between islanders and outsiders. He begins with vivid accounts of Captain James Cook’s nearly disastrous reef collision in 1770, followed by the 1802 expedition of Matthew Flinders, “the true European father of the Reef.” Here, too, are beachcombers, artists, a tropical Thoreau, and shipwrecked Barbara Thompson, a nineteenth-century Scotswoman who lived for five years among the Kaurareg people. McCalman also profiles intrepid scientists who advanced our knowledge of reef-building corals and their role in this precious ecosystem, a World Heritage site, from naturalist Joseph Beete Jukes to scandal-evading William Saville-Kent, a pioneer in marine science photography, to today’s ardent reef advocate, Charlie Veron. McCalman’s “passionate history” is a call to save this “fragile global wonder.” --Donna Seaman

Review

“[Iain] McCalman has written an innovative history . . .His approach is at once episodic and kaleidoscopic . . . McCalman's own passion for the Reef informs the book throughout, whether in his engaging account of sailing through it in a replica of Cook's HMS Endeavour, or in his concluding laments for its environmental degradation . . . For a work about such a vast topic--big in scale, big in its implications for how we hold a planet in trust--The Reef is a compellingly intimate account of human interaction with this slice of nature.” ―David Armitage, Los Angeles Review of Books“By the end of McCalman's transformative book, we feel the full force of this slow-motion emergency. In story after story of fascination and trepidation, in revelations and in requiems, this passionate history brings to life the Great Barrier Reef's magnificent mutability.” ―Rob Nixon, The New York Times Book Review“Reefs, like their terrestrial counterparts, tropical rainforests, are increasingly threatened by human activity; some already exhibit a marked decline. Like rainforests, too, they show exceptional biodiversity, a characteristic which is increasingly valued as an index of the wellbeing of our planet. It is this decline that makes Iain McCalman's The Reef, on the discovery, history and future prospects of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, so timely. It is fascinating because of the wealth of information it contains on both familiar and unfamiliar topics.” ―Andrew Campbell, Times Literary Supplement“A masterly biography of the Great Barrier Reef . . . Mr McCalman's sweeping and absorbing history is well timed.” ―The Economist“Australia's Great Barrier Reef stretches for around 1,430 miles along the continent's northeast coast, encompassing an area roughly half the size of Texas. Those who have dived into its pristine reaches know firsthand that it is one of Earth's natural wonders--a coral world of exceptional beauty and diversity. Yet as Iain McCalman's "passionate history" of the reef makes clear, it is also a stage on which dreams, ambitions, and great human tragedies have been played out. He tells his story by chronicling lives that, either inadvertently or intentionally, have shaped our perception of the coralline labyrinth.” ―Tim Flannery, The New York Review of Books“[An] ambitious, elegant narrative of the Great Barrier Reef and its remarkably drawn-out discovery.” ―Jennie Erin Smith, The Wall Street Journal“Iain McCalman's The Reef, like its subject, builds slowly into beauty, offering an account of the Great Barrier Reef as it exists in culture, language and dream, as well as in marine biology.” ―Robert Macfarlane, The Observer (UK)“McCalman's tone shifts from the boy's own adventure, scientific excitement and scamming of early encounters, to dizzying disaster-epic suspense. But never for a moment does his literary skill falter. His detailed explanation of marine science is a model of translation for the layman. And his respect for Indigenous people is a model of intercultural translation . . . He describes the Indigenous view of events without exoticising the individuals he talks to. Nostalgia permeates the book, for ancestral lands lost and for what we all might be losing now.” ―Miriam Cosic, The Guardian (UK)“Splendid . . . [A] wonderful paean to the Great Barrier Reef.” ―David B. Williams, The Seattle Times“An intimate exploration of the Great Barrier Reef . . . The Reef uncovers personal stories that weave together the biological evolution and human discovery of the Great Barrier Reef culminating in its current state--a World Heritage site in desperate need of protection.” ―The Inquirer and Mirror (Nantucket, MA)“The Great Barrier Reef is both easily understood and awe-inspiring in this history of its discovery, exploitation and beauty.” ―Julia Jenkins, Shelf Awareness“[Iain McCalman's] mission is to illuminate the reef's glorious complexity by recounting the stirring, wild, and surprising stories of fraught encounters between islanders and outsiders . . . [His] ‘passionate history' is a call to save this ‘fragile global wonder.'” ―Donna Seaman, Booklist“McCalman loves the reef and fears for its future . . . [He] selects his subjects judiciously and writes with flair, creating a multifaceted portrait of one of the world's great wonders.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Combining engaging accounts of early explorers with discussion of current scientific findings and their implications . . . McCalman's book will be enjoyed by the general reader, students at the undergraduate level, those interested in the history of science, and travelers to this magnificent region.” ―Judith B. Barnett, Library Journal“Brilliant, beautiful, a hymn to the past, present and increasingly uncertain future of one of the world's greatest treasures. The Reef is necessary reading for anyone who cares about the future of the ocean.” ―James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers“The Great Wall of China is dwarfed to nothingness, along with everything else proud humans have built, by the minuscule polyps that fashioned the Great Barrier Reef. That living reef, the world's largest, is in desperate trouble, the victim of climate change and a melancholy legacy of carelessness, indifference, and greed. The Reef is more than a lament; it is a brilliant history of our long interaction with this precious feature of our world, weaving together coexistence, terror, exploration, exploitation, scientific curiosity, and love. Iain McCalman has a rare gift for conjuring up both famous and forgotten lives and for awakening our wonder.” ―Stephen Greenblatt, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Swerve: How the World Became Modern“Usually a subject of natural history, the Great Barrier Reef finally finds a place in a contradiction fundamental to the history of modernity: the desire to preserve nature while exploiting it for profit. With this book, Iain McCalman cements his reputation as one of the finest historians of our time.” ―Dipesh Chakrabarty, Professor of History, University of Chicago“History doesn't get any more lively than this. A stylish, racing read, The Reef surprises with every turn of the page, investing one of the world's greatest natural structures with human drama. In almost cinematic episodes that veer from scientific epiphany to physical brutality, from the eighteenth century to our own conflicted age, Iain McCalman introduces an amazing cast of characters. In the process--and it's a very entertaining one--he creates an entirely new account of a natural marvel, couched in gripping historical narrative, both witty and rigorously scholarly, sweepingly grand and vividly detailed.” ―Philip Hoare, author of The Whale: In Search of the Giants of the Sea“The magnitude of the awesome Great Barrier Reef is matched here by Iain McCalman's deep exploration of its compelling history and colorful ecology. An important biography of a fragile place.” ―Katherine Harmon Courage, author of Octopus! The Most Mysterious Creature in the Sea“In The Reef, Iain McCalman artfully weaves scientific inquiry and historical rigor into the life stories of twenty individuals. As we experience this extraordinary place through their eyes, we come away informed and inspired.” ―Jim Toomey, creator of Sherman's Lagoon and executive director of Mission Blue“No other historian I know brings together exploration, science, the environment, and strange experience with the erudition and the eloquence of Iain McCalman. The Reef is utterly absorbing as well as richly informative.” ―Nicholas Thomas, director and curator of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge

The Great Barrier Reef is something many know exists but few know much about. In Iain McCalman’s book “The Reef a Passionate History” I felt intrigued when I looked at the cover and read the synopsis. Upon opening the book and reading the first few pages I what I was expecting and what I was reading were very different things. The book borders the lines of being a romantic novel from the prospective of a man enamored with tales from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. I was expecting to gain some insight into the biology and possibly geology of the “three thousand individual reefs, more than nine hundred islands, and thousands of marine species”, as noted in the synopsis. Instead the book dove off into the love life and hardships of the people who tried to study and inhabit the numerous shoals, beaches, and banks of the reef. From the excursions of Captain James Cook, to the studies and preservation efforts of numerous different aristocratic misfits. The book became a rinse and repeat of the same struggle to inhabit the environment and develop an understanding of it with some aspect of romance and the occasional tumultuous skirmish ending in the death of a token character. I was less than enthusiastic to continue reading beyond the first few chapters once the common theme had been recycled. There are few books that grasp their audience and leave them wanting more and there are many that lose their audience after the first few chapters, unfortunately for Iain McCalman, “A Passionate History” was the later of the two.

“The Reef: A Passionate History”, by historian Iain McCalman, would have benefited from a different title. The book is less a passionate history of reefs, and more a history of people engaged in pursuits that they found passionate. The book is filled with dramatic tales, from Captain Cook’s entrapment within the reefs that would later become known as the Great Barrier Reef, to the story of murderous siblings William and Constance Kent’s flight to Australia. While these narratives are ferociously entertaining, they only remotely focus on the science behind reefs. Several scientific accomplishments are described, including the first coral dive, and the origination of underwater photography. However, the majority of the book focuses on theatrical interactions with the native people (either bloodthirsty savages or welcoming familial individuals, depending on various character perceptions) and descriptions of island life as experienced by explorers, colonists, artists, and castaways. A person seeking to learn legitimate coral reef science would not be satisfied with McCalman’s work. Some of this can be excused as many of the characters in this book lived and died centuries before the discovery of much of what modern coral science tells us (the symbiotic relationship between corals and zooxanthellae, for example). However, it seems curious that many of these people would be mentioned at all. For example, the descriptions of Mary Fraser’s alleged abuse at the hands of the natives contributes little to any type of legitimate reef history. In contrast, her dubious account appears to be used only as fodder for a British hatred and fear of the indigenous people found around the reefs. While it can be said that the arrival of these British revenge-seekers may have contributed to the “history” of the reef, it would be on a bare bones scale. Consider it comparable to someone penning “A Book of China”, and mainly focusing on people that arrive in China, with only a minor focus on the history, demographics, geology, etc., of the Asian nation. Also, it seems unnecessary for McCalman to spend so many words on some of these characters. In the case of Mrs. Fraser, a brief introduction would have been sufficient. Only in later chapters does it become clear what the author’s seeming motive is; to seduce readers with imaginative, colorful descriptions of life around the reefs, and arouse in them a sense of wonder and responsibility. The latter parts of the book describe the fragile state of the reefs, despite the earlier apparent hardiness that Captain Cook encountered. Climate change is addressed in “Extinction”, the book’s final chapter, and there one can see the dilemma McCalman faced. Much like reef scientist Charlie Veron, McCalman worried about raising awareness of the reefs, without imparting a fatalistic attitude. The author seems to want people to care about the reefs, and communicate the delicate condition of their survival. He appears to want to reveal the direness of the situation without making readers believe there is no hope. In total, “The Reef: A Passionate History”, is a very captivating read, if one is into on dits and the interactions of scandalous individuals. Iain McCalman is a historian, and boasts of no scientific background. If a reader can take this work as mainly an amusement, with a minor stressor upon global environmental responsibility, they will not be disappointed. However, if a reader is looking for hard-hitting scientific material involving reefs and their interactions, perhaps they should look elsewhere for their literary nourishment.

Iain McCalman’s “The Reef: A Passionate History” is indeed a passionate history. He divides the novel into three parts: Terror, Nurture, and Wonder. Each part focuses on a specific group of people: the Western explorers, the Indigenous people, and the romantic artists, respectively. You are put into the shoes of real life people who had a connection to the Great Barrier Reef, whether they were born to it or called to it. You read about true events that took place, their emotions to said events, and their reactions. If you want to read a book about the science behind the Great Barrier Reef, the species that live within it, and their part in the oceanic environment, I strongly suggest you choose another book. I shall state again: IF YOU WANT SCIENCE (i.e. IF YOU ARE JUDGING THIS BOOK BY IT’S COVER) DO NOT BUY THIS ONE! If you want history, politics, and read about the mind-boggling number of possibilities one can die from a spear (at least one in most chapters), then read this book. The first part, Terror, focuses on the Western explorers. You read of the first Europeans who tried to navigate and map out the Great Barrier Reef and their experiences with the locals, or aborigines. As always, making friends is hard at first (especially when they spear you to death for being ghosts), but with the help of trade and exchange of knowledge, a friendship does occur. Some return to England to say that the aborigines are a monstrous primitive people, like Eliza Fraser. The second part, Nurture, focus on the Indigenous people. You read of the local tribes and how they don’t get along with one another. A Scottish woman by the name Barbara Thompson was shipwrecked alongside one of the islands, was adopted by the head of a tribe (for believing she was the ghost of his late daughter), has a child with one of the tribesmen who rescued her named Boroto (who most likely died from a spear after a “brutal white reprisal conducted in error” against his people. She returns to Europe to return to her life with no intent to discredit the aborigines, but the reporter telling her story decides to make a name for himself and lie about her “abuse”. Also, during a cyclone you read that a man was “killed while trying to rescue his daughter, who was actually already dead, a spear of broken timber driven through her heart.” Just when you thought the author couldn’t write a new way for a man to die from a spear… you are proven wrong. The third part, Wonder, focuses on the romantic artists. You read of men and women who tried to bring an artistic light to the Great Barrier Reef for Europe. This chapter tells the story of men who tried to disprove Darwin and failed; men who tried to preserve the reef by publishing about the reef and creating tourism, which destroys the reef, so they failed; and men and women who tried to bring the science and the arts of the reef together and failed. There is so much politics and failure in this segment you will wind up wanting to spear yourself, which would be the cherry on top for Iain McCalman. In conclusion, if you want to read about the science behind the reef, read another book. If you want to read the personal soap-operas of various people, like the man who fled to Australia to run from the fact he was being charged with the murder of his half-brother, then read this book. If you would also like to learn about the one thousand ways to die from a spear only to read about nine-hundred and ninety-nine just to realize that you are the thousandth, then read this book. Excuse me while I go fashion a spear.

This is a review of the free Kindle edition.I had, of course, heard of the Picture of Dorian Gray, but with the joy of a Kindle I'm now able to read it for free.Wow.The story is amazing. The character of Dorian Gray shines (sucks the light out of the room?) during the story. The imagery of the picture is wonderful to reflect the corruption of Dorian's soul. Along with Dorian, I do wonder if he could have reversed it, if he had cared enough to try. The ending while abrupt, was perfect for the character, as it seems that Dorian was protected by something, to make sure that his end could only come about the way that it did.Definite recommend.

This was easily one of the best books I have ever read. This book was written over a century ago and still remains popular and insightful. Oscar Wilde’s perception of humanity is, in my opinion, spot on. Every word of this book has depth and meaning.I absolutely despise Dorian Gray, but I am sure that was Wilde’s intention. How could you like a man that is so selfish, narcissistic, and obsessed with his own youth and beauty at the cost of all others around him? Dorian truly represents the ugliest that humanity has to offer, and I am happy that he pays for his sins in a fairly poetic nature. To lighten the serious tones of this book is Lord Henry, easily my favorite character. Nearly every line he speaks is a life-quote and his character gives insight to Wilde’s own thoughts regarding the world and the people in the world. A few of my favorites:“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”“The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it & your soul grows sick with longing for things it has forbidden itself.”“Some things are more precious because they don’t last long.”I liked this book so much that I want to re-read it immediately :).

I am getting very tired of ordering what I think are professionally prepared books and finding that they are print-on-demand works probably put together by one person that do not adhere to certain standards of the book industry. In this case, the title refers to "other writings" but it does not seem to contain any other writings. In any case, it is hard to tell because there is no table of contents. Chapters do not begin on a new page but (to save money) a new chapter will begin anywhere on the page.Sometimes there are smart quotes. Sometimes there are unformatted quotation marks.Margins are very close to the edges of the pages, again to save money. Most troubling, the original Bantam edition was about 450 pages; this edition is 190 pages. So, I would recommend you go with a name brand publisher instead of ordering this version. Why did I not give it one or two stars? Because I did not notice typos and the entire text of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" appears to be contained here, plus the front and back covers, which contain old portraits of the author, are attractive.

he Picture Of Dorian Gray starts out with the artist who is painting the title character, Dorian Gray. The artist is enthralled with Dorian’s beauty and a sense of innocence. The artist, Basil, introduces Dorian to a friend, Lord Henry, as he sits for the portrait. Some could say that Lord Henry introduces Dorian to a life of no morals and selfishness. As the lord is the first to mention that the painting will always be a picture of Dorian forever young and the real Dorian will grow old. In a way, this stimulates Dorian to announce his wish to give his soul for the reverse. This was my second time trying to read TPODG. The first time I just could not get into it. This time, I can not figure out what made me not want to read it. The story is beautiful. Oscar Wilde’s words paint a portrait of its own. It is written in this mesh of Victorian and Contemporary. So for me that makes it easier to relate to. The words are not like reading Shakespeare.I am not good at critiquing books and getting into every metaphor, or meaning behind it all. When I try that with a book I can’t enjoy it. So I just read, and from the beginning, I could tell this was going to be a new favorite author. This coming from a reader who is not a fan of many classics...but I keep trying and here I found one I loved.I bought the book of the complete works of Oscar Wilde and will be next reading The Canterville Ghost. I can not gush enough how much I loved this book. I am curious now to watch one of the movie version of Dorian Gray because I never have.

This book takes a deep look at emotions and anxiety, even more than the first one. To those that don’t feel results immediately, this works 100%. It is not always immediate. Especially if you have a lot to retrain and let go of. I went from not being able to eat anything but boiled eggs and barely drink water without ending up on the bathroom floor to now eating a wide range of foods in comparison. I have let go of a lot, which has been hard. You have your ups and downs, even feeling a lot worse at times, but keep going. An important part of healing as touched on in Amy’s books is letting go. We have to train and support our bodies in letting go. I got this book at a good time. I recently have been dealing with a lot of anxiety along with what I was clearing from the previous book. This book is perfect for the moments where you feel lost and don’t know what you are feeling. This book has given me much insight already on what is happening to my body and why. I always recommend her books to everyone. I can’t live without these methods now. I am not “healed”, but a part of me is. I am healing, that makes me feel healed, because I am trying. It truly works and changes your whole perspective on healing and what you are going through. This book can change your life, if you let it.

I'm a conduit of energy healing, and I truly believe that emotional work is a cruicial component that paramount to anchoring and amplifying a person's healing.I read Amy's first book 'How to Heal yourself when no one else can' and it absolutely resonated with me. I've read many books on energy work such as Donna Edens, and what I love about hers is how she simplifies and teaches how to put these techniques to real use. Many of the same techniques used in her first book are also in this book; however, this one focuses on how to use them for anxiety. In paticular, a few things that stand out for me in this book.I love how she explains the importance of both: dealing with anxiety as you are experiencing it, and also, establishing a practice for healing experiences that have not been processed.I love how Amy explains how to tell if an experience has been processed! This is so useful as is much of this entire book. And, what also resonates with me -- and I love, is how it's explained that often times, it's our subconscious that knows the truth about the root cause of the anxiety. And her techinques allow us to tap into our subconscious to provide us with this vital information. We could spend hours upon hours trying to figure it out, and be missing the boat.As you can see by the pic, I've already gotten lots of use out of this book....really more like a workbook for me!!I would like to say thank you to Amy for writing this book!!!I hope you will continue to write more as I can't get enough!

Effective advice! Amy's work and techniques have really helped me! It is so refreshing to hear someone else acknowledge that we can't always "just breathe" to fix anxiety. It is empowering to have the tools in my own toolbox, and to know that they've always been there. Identifying and clearing the root causes and emotions behind the symptoms is so effective. I can't wait to dive deeper and continue to heal. Thank you, Amy!!

If I could give this book 10 stars I would!! Amy gives you easy and accessible techniques to release anxiety. I have read so many books and taken lots of programs and I can honestly say this is truly one of the best. I use the techniques everyday and feel so blessed that I have found her work. I have taken her online program and learned so much from that and her first book. Also, this is the very first time that I have written a review for anything, so that alone is testimony to the value of this book and Amy’s work.

I had expectations and they weren’t “tapping “myself all over. I was hoping for some new workable ideas on dealing with my issues of anxiety and although, new to me, this type of therapy didn’t work for me. Interesting, but just that. As a matter of fact, felt more anxious. So my search is ongoing. Keep trying, learn and continue on.

Amy has loaded lots of straight forward techniques that you can use to ease your anxiety. She also goes deeper to help you discover the roots of your anxiety so you begin to eradicate it. I love her relaxed, conversational writing style and detailed scripts. The Sweep is so relaxing! Her many online freebies (Facebook group, website and videos) complement the book so you never feel alone in your journey. I've made more progress with her techniques than anything else I've tried, on my own and with practitioners. Highly recommended.

From the time I began reading Amy's book, I couldn't put it down! This easy-to-read guide to managing anxiety provides a fresh and effective approach to dealing with something that effects so many people everyday. Through this book, I've learned various techniques that have been very helpful for me. I've already recommended this book to friends and family and highly recommend anyone give it a try!

I absolutely adore Amy - I have had a couple sessions with her, I have read and continue to practice from her first book - and this book completely exceeded my expectations. It helps to pull up stuff from the dark in a lightful way and let it go.. a book I wish I had years ago. This book is full of wisdom, exercises that promote healing and growth, and in a tone that is needed when doing tough work.
