Great for beginners! I had taken private lessons from an "expert" instructor and got no where as he said I could not grasp the concepts fast enough. I found a new instructor for "beginners" who recommended this book to compliment her classes. Audrey Grant's book breaks the concepts down to the basics of bridge. At the end of each chapter is a quiz to reinforce the lesson. I was surprised at how much I had retained.
Took bridge lessons 30 years ago == which means I hardly remembered anything == and this book was excellent. The chapters were clearly laid out with examples, and sample hands to show what she meant. At the back are 32 deals where she shows what the bid and first play should have been and some other steps. We found this extremely helpful to duplicate these hands and see if we could get the "right" answer and initial play, and make the bid. Very useful! True, she has "her way" and her rules... but there is a lot for consistency, assuming you are playing with folks that have an idea of what they are doing too!
This book is absolutely great for beginners learning to play Bridge. After playing, I read up on the book and the activity for the time we played and I learn it even more. Cannot believe that at age 66 I am learning to play bridge.
This book covers most of the basic mechanics of bridge, some basics on how to lead a hand, plus no-trump, major- and minor-suit opening bids and responses, assuming silent opponents. That's it. What it covers, it covers very well. Grant provides some insight to the novice about why you would bid a certain way, so you'll come out with an understanding of why noncompetitive bidding works the way it does. But you'll need another source before you'll actually be able to play your first game, and you'll outgrow the information in this book *very* quickly. Two major complaints:1. I wish that the author had at least covered all of the mechanics and scoring rules of the game, even if very briefly, so that the book could serve as a complete introduction. For example, Grant mentions double bids, but does not devote even a sentence to how they work. She does, however, devote a sentence to letting the reader know that she will cover double bids in the next book in the series. This leads me to my next complaint:2. The book has clearly been created by a slick marketing machine, and is rife with ads ads ads for the next book in this series, books in other series, bridge software, bridge magazines, etc. It presents incomplete information so as to lock you into the series, thus making you pay $30 (for books 1-3) for *less* information (since those books don't cover declarer or defender play) than is available for $15 in other more-complete introductory bridge texts, such as in Bridge for Dummies or the Complete Idiot's Guide to Bridge. All in all, this book is expensive for what you get, and I don't think it's worth the price. By the way, the American Contract Bridge League offers *wonderful* free learning software that I'd recommend you start out with before buying any book at all. Also, is it just me, or do many of the reviews of all three (so far) books in this series read like shill reviews?EDIT: The more I learn about bridge, the lower my opinion of this book gets. Stay away.
Best book I have found. Used in my bridge class. You can sort out a deck of cards to play the practice hands. A computerized version is available on a CD or download from Bridge Baron that includes audio, text of the book, and automated exercises.
This is THE book for beginning bridge. I only wish it was available in Kindle format. The price was better from Amazon than from my bridge club. I really like the explanations and logic for bidding. It makes more sense to me than learning the bidding conventions by rote. The quizzes are very helpful too.
This is a fabulous book to use to learn bridge. It is easy to read and the examples and exercises will help you to learn bridge. I have recommended this to friends and they agree this is a great help to a beginner. I recommend burying Audrey Grant's 'Bridge at a Glance' to use while playing in an informal group to help you bid.
This is the best basics on Bridge and I will buy the next in the series of three when I'm finished with this one . I am learning to play bridge and have purchased several books on the subject. I have found this one to be the most helpful!
