Review
"Essential." (Choice)“Maza has finally provided us with a strong synthetic and contemporary work that reflects the development of historical writing over the last few decades. Nothing out there combines the accessibility and range of Thinking About History; it is a literate, current, and inviting survey. Maza successfully captures the complexity of issues that have teased historians over the centuries. She raises the right questions, discusses the right scholarship, and engages with the right fields. Thinking About History is a model of concise and reflective historiographical coverage and the best synthesis of its kind.” (David Brown, Elizabethtown College)“Maza offers many intelligent reflections on how history is ‘done’ these days, after a period of fifty years or so during which historians have rethought their practice of the discipline. She also gives her readers an excellent crash course in the various different schools of, or approaches to, history that have emerged in that time. Thinking About History is the best concise overview of Western historiography over this period that I know of.” (Allan Megill, University of Virginia)

This is an amazing short introduction to the history of history. Very readable. Very accessible. Balanced assessments. Really really useful for historians of all levels.
I have taught a Historiography class, required of all sophomore history majors at my college, since 2005. During this time I have considered and /or used every available historiography text on the market. Maza's Thinking About History is by far the best text out there. And the price is unbeatable. But what did my sophomore history students (and one English major) think of the text? I asked them in class, and got the following responses:“I love the provocative examples.â€â€œI love the different perspectives she gives on so many critical issues.â€â€œHer writing is very clear and I found no place where she was needlessly wordy.â€â€œShe clearly has her own stance on these topics, but her approach is never unfair. Even when her own opinion came through, she never adopted the tone of “obviously…†Instead she left fascinating questions for us to explore further.â€â€œShe takes obviously complex controversies and breaks them down in a way that I can really understand the issues.â€â€œHer chapters contain overlapping themes – what amazes me is the way that she is able to handle these themes in chapter after chapter without repeating herself, but rather showing new aspects of each. I loved it.â€â€œShe raises a lot of questions to provoke further inquiry – it makes me want to go explore some of these issues on my own.â€â€œShe takes some complex stuff here and makes it understandable. But that does not mean she makes it simplistic – every time I read her chapter, I kept chewing on the ideas she was presenting for days afterward.â€â€œI love the way that she uses clear examples from writers for each of the big questions. I never felt like I was just learning about a system of thought, which I would have found boring. She made the controversies and issues come to life in a way that always drew me in.â€Maza's book obviously inspired and taught my students well. If you are looking for an up-to-date and engaging study of history, look no further.
Thoughtful and extremely well written, this is a graceful conversation about the development of historical thought. It mentions most of the key theoretical shifts in the practice of history. Very useful and well organized.
This book should be required reading for all graduate students or upper-level history majors who intend to continue on to grad school. Maza offers a clear, insightful, and witty overview of historiography and historical methodologies, from the emergence of history as a field in the 19th century through the present. All the major paradigm shifts, the development of different schools, and all key debates are given consideration. I also appreciate her even-handedness -- she explores controversial topics with enough critical distance to make her interpretations fair. Perhaps the only criticism worth mentioning (and it's one that Maza acknowledges repeatedly): she is by training a Europeanist, and while she does engage African, Asian, Eastern European, and Latin American scholarship, she does so a bit less than she engages scholarship from the so-called "Atlantic World." This is not to say she ignores these fields -- she most certainly does not. I enjoyed in particular her reading of sub-altern studies in India and the debates around Tim Snyder's Bloodlands. However, the examples she draws tend to be more from her areas of specialization. Perhaps this is unavoidable -- who can truly become an expert of all sub-fields of an academic discipline in this day and age? The age of Diderot this is not. Notwithstanding, I think this is an excellent book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. She also draws heavily upon colleagues (current and former) from Northwestern University, where she teaches. As a result, I think, the book stands as an excellent statement of departmental philosophy. Disclaimer: I graduated from the NU History Department, so I'd know :)
