The difficult part of this book, for me, has been the editorial comments made by the author. For example, here's a comment from chapter 1, "The Advantages of JSP""PHP is a free, open-source HTML-embedded scripting language that is somewhat similar to both ASP and JSP. The advantage of JSP is that the dynamic part is written in Java, which you probably already know, which already has an extensive API for networking, database access, distributed objects, and the like, whereas PHP requires learning an entirely new language."That entire paragraph and many like it could be summarized using the author's own words.."JSP is better than every other programming language out there because it uses Java."I know I'm convinced! (*wink*)Here's another in chapter 2, section 2.6:"Be aware, however, that it is possible for the Web server to crash. After all, no all Web servers are written in reliable programming languages like Java; some are written in languages (such as ones named after letter of the alphabet) where it is easy to read or write off the ends of arrays, make illegal typecasts, or have dangling pointers due to memory reclamation errors."These types of comments, like many many others located throughout the book, make it appear as if the book is trying to "convert" me to become a Java zealot rather than just learn the language of JSP and Servlet technology. It becomes frustrating to have to read through countless comments on why a particular method is "harder with every other programming language on this planet" rather than just explain how do perform a particular task.As far as the actual "meat" of the text, there is some really good, basic information regarding JSP and servlets. I do not recommend this book if you don't know any programming and are trying to learn. You're better off with a basic Java book to start with or you'll get lost pretty quickly.I give this book 3 out of 5 stars. I think that size of this could be cut down by 25% if the editorial drivel was removed. To avoid being totally negative, I really have learned a lot from the material considering I started the book only having experience with ASP, PHP, and Perl for server-side programming.
Not a book for beginning programmers, however if you have minimal java experience and are proficient in other languages you will be able to figure it out. This book is an excellent read but has little reference value because it has no index. It is very informative if you are looking for something that explains the in's and out's and why's of .jsp and servlets, but if you are looking for lessons and sample code, you will have better luck looking for it online. But then again if you have experience, you can figure out the code yourself -not that difficult.P.S. There is a wealth of hints and code at java.sun.com That site coupled with this book was enough to get me on my way.
I like the book as a novice to this tehnology. It covers the things that I needed to know but there are lots of refferences to the volume 2 which in my opinion could have been integrated into this book easily if the author had removed the java code that he put in volume one. Basicaly, I prefer to have code snippets about the API or concepts that are being discussed and not 5 pages of code (which, by the way are also available on the Internet). But the grand picture IMHO is that the author has done a good job with this and the volume 2 books.
I can't understand how this book has received so many 4 and 5 star reviews. It is just terrible! After reading many of the chapters, I found websites on the same topic that explain the topics WAY better. This book is all over the place! It constantly refers to things you haven't read yet such as "For data that is specific to a user, store it in the HtpSession object (see Chapter 9, 'Session Tracking')". If it did that now and then, fine... but this is in almost every section of the book! It's very hard to understand things that you aren't addressing until future chapters. Just hold off and talk about that topic when you get to it and quit referring to it in earlier chapters! The paragraphs in the book are just a pile of gumbidy-gook too! It's like trying to listen to a lecture from someone who keeps getting off topic. It's all over the place. The examples are terrible too. One thing you learn in beginning programming is formatting and white space to make your code readable. Some of the examples in this book are SO hard to read for a beginner. Again, I looked at servlet examples on the internet and they were SO much better. It made it much easier to follow.I haven't read another book on Java servlets yet. So, maybe they're all difficult to read. But, regardless, this book was truly painful.
This book is outdated. it's not very student friendly...
This is an old book, but still is relevant for 90% of the material covered as servlets and server pages have not changed much in the last 10 years. Lot's of tutorials and code examples to guide the reader, and is organized nicely.
I love it when I find a book targeted to a reader with exactly my background: I am an experienced programmer overall, with significant Java experience on the desktop but limited server-side programming knowledge and basic HTML experience. The book is well written, the examples are usually clear and to the point.I can't wait to get my hands on vol. 2 when it becomes available.
This book (and Vol. 2) are rock solid introductions to Servlets and JSP. They are not perfect (mostly through sins of omission); but they keep you on your feet. These are NOT for newcomers to Java. They explain enough that most of the code examples run without any alterations or fiddling.
