I bought this book to add to my vast collection of Supernatural lore and I was bitterly disappointed. I read a book that was repetitive foe the sake of filling a page requirement and one that was thinly researched and left out key entries, most notable the Hungry Ghost legends of China and the Wendigo legends of North America. Her insistent mentioning of Anne Rice and her vampire novels as a source of information and her lazy cross referencing made me regret the money I spent on the book, even as a used book. If you want an exhaustive source, get Gordon Melton's Vampire Book. Far superior.

When I'm working on my vampire novel, and get stuck, I do bibliomancy in this book, and it gives me something to write about to further the plot.

AWESOME BOOK!!!!

Thanks for adding to my collection!

Perfect condition! looks brand new. Pretty big book with no writing on the insides. love it. i love all the element encylopedia books

An in-depth investigation published in Skeptical Inquirer magazine in 2013 revealed that Cheung did little or no research on the information in this “encyclopedia.” She merely did a Google search and then cut-and-pasted the information into her book as if she had researched and written it herself. Here is only one of hundreds of examples of work that Cheung copied from other writers, claiming their words as her own. These were plagiarized from Anthony Masters’s 1972 book "The Natural History of the Vampire,"which you can find at[...]Compare for yourself line by line:“To put an end to her torture she finally confessed to all these crimes, but no sooner had she been taken off the rack, she claimed to be innocent. So she was tortured again...” (Masters, 1972)“She was tortured in the most ghastly manner in order to get her to confess, but no sooner had she been taken off the rack she claimed to be innocent. So she was tortured again...” (Cheung, 2010)“...until she made the following confession: "For the last forty years she had fornicated with countless devils that had visited her in the shape of cats, dogs, fleas and worms; [and] had given birth to about seventeen children conceived by her devil lovers...” (Masters, 1972)“...until she had confessed to consorting with the Devil, who visited her in the shape of cats, dogs, and worms. She also confessed to giving birth to somewhere in the region of 17 children (the exact number is unclear) conceived with her devil lovers...” (Cheung, 2010)“...had murdered them, eaten them and drunk their blood. This time, Clara had no chance to retract her confession, because she died when she was taken off the rack.... The judicial report concluded: "The devil would not let her reveal anything more and so wrung her neck." On August 23, 1597, her corpse was burned." (Masters, 1972)“...murdering them, and drinking their blood. This time, Clara had no chance to retract her confession, because she died when she was taken off the rack. The judicial report concluded: "The devil would not let her reveal anything more and so wrung her neck." On August 23, 1597, her corpse was burned." (Cheung, 2010)The publisher, HarperCollins, may have violated copyright law by publishing other writers’ work without credit or attribution. Cheung should be embarrassed by this, and HarperCollins should remove this book from its listing. I would be very wary of believing anything written by this author.

actually I might like this book if she had written it. She didn't. It's written by Google. So if the name of the author was changed, I might give those authors credit for their hard work. sorry, but I would like to read an actual book written by this author before I can just the work. Until then, for a Google cut and paste, why pay when you can get this information for free online?

This book has a great array of topics. Unfortunately, as many reviewers have noted, it has also been heavily plagiarised. Its copy-paste content was exposed by Ben Radford. See: [...]If you're after a good vampire encyclopedia, go for J. Gordon Melton's "The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead" (1994; 1999; 2011) instead.
