The book is worthless for starting a business in India. It gives advice like "you need to apply for a tax ID number". Seriously? How about some advice on how to do that and the steps to follow. There is little advice about PAN's, TAN's, Import licenses, Shop & Establishment, etc. Worthless!
Don't be afraid of the the title, which is just a bit silly. The book is quite sound.I used this book to prepare for leading my first Scrum training in India. I found it very helpful to understand Indians and what motivates (or does not motivate) them. This helped me structure my course to be more effective. I was also able to work more effectively with my business partners. In India they may speak English, but the culture is quite different and a little understanding goes a long way!Readers of Sharon Bowman's Training From the Back of the Room! will find the advice on training quite in sync with the TFTBOTR philosophy.My only complaint is that the book is 5 years old. Many of the examples were even older. I would like to see more up to date examples, if for no other reason than to have some assurances that the examples are still relavent. It seems India is rapidly changing place.

I am not sure this gives you the true picture of what it is like to do business in India - seems too polished and white-washed to me.
Ok I only got through the first 20 pages, but facts verifiable, and characterization of systems are fictional. It reads like a piece of propaganda for soliciting business. This in no way will prepare you. Years of experience with India makes me wonder if there is another India he is talking about. No, India does not rank number two after the US in billionaires, banking...well yes it is changing and liberalizing but from a socialist system. Skill and productivity in all sectors is a fraction of the West. Software engineering is about 1:6 in productivity to the US, yes 6 hours in India for what it takes one hour in the US. There are not many equally skilled in India, studies show that less than 13 percent of engineers graduate qualified to function as an engineers, so be prepared for mixed results and be cautious until you get proven ability to deliver.You need to start from facts, this book appears to reflect popular opinions in India that get picked up in Western popular media which is often fictional.That does not mean India is bad, just adjust expectations and manage carefully. It is a developing country, do not expect it to replace systems and processes you do in the West without loss of efficiency. Good luck.
Even though my interest is specifically in doing non-profit work in India, not necessarily business per se, I was still able to benefit a lot from this book.It is a great introduction to India in general for Americans like me, helpfully summarizing elements of the country's history, politics, and law that one needs to know to operate there, and most helpfully helping you recognize potential difficulties you and your Indian co-workers will face in communicating with one another, and how to overcome them.I will for sure require my India team members to read this book!
I think it did a great job of explaining India and getting things done in India. Lots of good points, nicely put. It was fun to read. I think it makes any foreigner much more knowledgeable and confident about how to deal with the Indian market and people.
Of the vast numbers of "manuals" about doing business in India, this one was the most useful for me.In contrast to others, this book explains not only business related issues (like tax/law-system) in easy words, it also gives a wide range of necessary insights of what you have to expect, when coming to India.It gave me practical tips for all business and daily-life situations and i can really recommend it to anyone.
