The Story of the Easter Bunny

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 - An elderly couple's petite white rabbit observes, assists, then eventually takes over the task of weaving baskets, coloring eggs, concocting candy, and delivering the gifts to village children. When the man and woman become too old to continue their labors, the bunny moves the operation to the woods, where he works inside a hollow tree, assisted by other rabbit friends. Tegen's text teems with sensory details: the eggs were "...the color of daffodils and of soft new leaves and of robins' eggs and of violets." Lambert's watercolors make merry with spring's pastels, providing detailed images of the cozy cottage kitchen as well as the rabbit den. However, some children may be concerned when the rabbit preserves the tasks' secrecy by leaving the humans when they are too frail to carry on. Nevertheless, this visually splendid story with folktale rhythms makes a good choice for holiday sharing. - Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. PreS-Gr. 1. The story of the Easter Bunny is revealed in this eye-opening exploration of the legendary rabbit's propensity for annual springtime egg coloration and basket distribution. It wasn't always the Easter Bunny who dyed eggs and wove baskets for the children--it was a round old couple who lived in a snug little house. Their pet white rabbit, however, always watched their preparations closely. One Easter morning, the old couple sleeps in, so the rabbit takes over. In time, the children discover they have the Easter Bunny to thank for their gifts. His secret identity cracked, the bunny leaves the old couple to set up shop in the shadow-filled wood, with the help of plenty of furry friends. This charming tale is so matter-of-factly told, readers will be wanting the truth about the Tooth Fairy next. Lambert's cozy paintings of Easter-time in a small English village are as lovely and inviting as a sugar egg. Karin SnelsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

With Easter coming soon, I bought this book for my 4 year old and we've been reading it quite often since she enjoys it so much. The illustrations are engaging and very colorful and the amount of text per page is perfect for a 4-8 year old without being too short or too wordy. The story explains how the Easter bunny came to deliver Easter baskets to children on Easter morning and now my daughter says she understands how he makes chocolate rabbits and how he makes all of the baskets every year. The story tells that an old couple in town during the winter months would weave baskets, dye eggs, and make chocolate eggs as their pet bunny watched. As the years go by, he gets very involved in making everything, eventually doing it all himself when the old couple becomes too old to do it anymore. He didn't think anyone saw him as he delivered all of the baskets, but when the children in town start to learn his secrets, he moves to a burrow in a tree where he and his bunny friends make everything away from anyone's view. I thought this was such a clever and creative explanation for how the Easter bunny became a legend - in all my years, I'd never thought about how the Easter bunny even came to be and the author does a great job of weaving the tale. A perfect pre-Easter read for the whole family!

I was looking for a book to introduce my 2 year old to the concept of the Easter Bunny and am so happy to have found this one. The story and illustrations have a warm, vintage feel, like a book that can be read each year and passed down through generations. In this way, it reminds me of classic Christmas books- one that feels magical and part of a family tradition. It provides a sweet origin story for the Easter Bunny and introduces the concept of an easter basket, dyed eggs, chocolate treats, as well as an explanation of why you won't see the Easter Bunny. The story is secular aside from one mention of the sound of church bells ringing on Easter morning, which is perfect for our family. It has simple text easy enough for my 2 year old to digest but is long enough that it will be an appropriate for many years to come.

The Story of the Easter BunnyI bought this for a friends child. She loved the pictures and just playing with the book alone. She sat and listened to the whole story. I think this is a very cute book, the illustrations are beautiful. A sweet story about an old couple and their pet rabbit , and how they worked hard to make Easter a happy occasion for all the little boys and girls. It's a story you will never get tired of reading and your kids will never tire of hearing!

Great pictures and nice story for my three and a half year old. He’s very interested in the Easter bunny and this is a cute little story about how the Easter bunny came to be. He enjoys it, but did seem to get a little bored after a few readings.

The book came in poor condition. Amazon sent me a new replacement book (which is great) but the replacement also arrived in poor condition. You could hardly turn the pages with how horribly the book was bound. The book binding was done crooked for both books I received! It wouldn’t be a big deal had it not made the book defective. I can’t imagine this book not falling apart after a few reads. Not worth buying at all.

I really love a good childeren's book and what I really love is to find out how the author came about creating /telling their story. Well, this story has an interesting background in that the author wrote it because he son wondered about the Easter Bunny, where did he come from and how did he get the job of being the Easter Bunny and with all those questions became this very book! This is a really cute story of the Easter Bunny's early years. There is a family of a little round older couple who have a white bunny and during the winter months the couple make baskets, chocolate eggs and dye and decorate eggs for the children in the town. Every year the little bunny watches and begins to help out... eventually to take over the "family business" completely because his parents had grown much older and his secret of where the Easter bunny lived was getting out among the children in his town. So, with great big waves from his family the Easter Bunny leaves home and find a nice hollow tree where he and some of his friends make the baskets, chocolates and eggs.I think this is a very cute book, the illustrations are soft and beautiful. The story is one that once read will become a family tradition to read the night or week before the Easter Bunny comes to visit your home just like the T'was the Night Before Christmas! Enjoy!!!

A GREAT STORY WITH ALMOST MYTHOLOGICAL TONE! CLASSIC STYLED ILLUSTRATIONS ADD TO THE NARRATIVE AND FUN. THIS IS A GREAT TREATMENT OF THE MAGIC AND WONDER OF THE EASTER BUNNY STORY. GREAT FUN TO READ OR LISTEN TO.

Appealing for preschoolers, Explains how the Easter bunny came to be, demonstrates helpfulness and kindness. Also includes the seasonal aspect of Easter and church element. Perfect!
