Monasticism started in the deserts of Egypt at the turn of the fourth century AD. St. Paul the Hermit and St. Anthony the Great were the pioneers of this Christian system which later spread to other parts of the world. this book is very helpful to anyone who would be interested in understanding how it all started and what it means to be a monastic in the concept of the founding fathers of Monasticism. it will give the reader a beautiful glimpse into a glorious heritage at a time when all the churches of the world were still united to fight against challenges from within and from without. it stands in glaring contrast to the prevailing standards of today's standards and ethics.
First off, this is not a scholarly book on the Desert Fathers, but a much-needed introduction to both the Sayings and their continuity lived in Egyptian Coptic monasteries through the centuries into the present day. The simplicity of the Sayings/photos format is refreshing and direct. The photography is so compelling that I spent much time simply looking at the photos alone without bothering with the text and they are their own moving experience. The Forward by the Patriarch of Alexandria reads like the warm, friendly invitation of a wise family uncle. The only reason my rating is four stars is because there were many severe typos in the Kindle edition which proved distracting. Otherwise, it successfully captures the spirit and fervor of these monastics on their ancient "home turf".
As an Orthodox Christian who is also a photographer, I have longed for books of this type. AXIOS! And may this be the start of a modern trend.
