This is more a technical book on how to create dashboard elements than providing examples of good dashboards actually used in firms, which is what I wanted. The book will still be useful if I try to create dashboards in Excel. I used to work in several large firms where senior management had "flash report" books of top level performance data by plant, division, etc. and I want some examples to start. This book assumes you know what you want to show, and focuses on how to create it using Excel techniques. It does provide some design tips, but few real world examples. I would have like to see a full set of dashboard reports for a real business to start, then weave that into how to create it in Excel.The book would have been more interesting if they started showing five real world FULL dashboards for different businesses, then progressed through the chapters showing how to do them in Excel. So five starts for the technical info, but I only give it 3 stars for few examples to build your own. Alternatives would be Tableau or Domo, which are software products aimed directly at dashboards. Another way is Lotus Notes.
I am changing the way to present metrics to my leadership. I want them to be able to tell - with very little guidance - at a glance, the status of the metrics I present. My goal is to make discussion very limited and let the metrics speak for themselves. Any discussion that arises will be for the sake of making course corrections or for recognizing superior performance.
Excellent step-by-step primer for building dashboards in Excel. I worked through all of the exercises and have put much to use in my work now. Highly recommended as a practical, hands-on text.
I own lots of books from the Dummies series. They are quite educational and easily understood. I would highly recommend this book for any Excel user.
