Even with cell phone maps so available, this little pop out map is still the best way to get around DC! First, I love the pop out map format. They use every available space efficiently, giving me a large map, a blow up of the most frequented area, and a public transit map, all on something that folds easily into a pocket. Cell phone maps can be hard to use because it is hard to see an overall plan of the city. Also, I like to mark the location of my hotel, etc, so that I can quickly see how everything relates. This is so useful even if you are navigating by phone. On my recent trip to DC, my friends abandoned their phones several times and just used my map. Even had a couple strangers ask to take a look! Love it.
This is now my 3rd pop out map purchase for different cities we've travelled in. I just love this company after using our first one for a Chicago trip. We used this D.C. one every single day of our trip. Invaluable. When we travel, these Pop Out maps are my "go to" maps for any city I plan on visiting. The size and quality is just an added bonus along with its other features. You can't miss with maps by this company. You won't be disappointed, I'm certainly not!!
This is a very nice little map; clearly the best pocket map for DC. It doesn't cover as much area as the larger maps such as the Borch or MapEasy maps. It's not waterproof like Borch or Streetwise. But it's a nice, pocketable map, and it covers the key areas of Washington. One note is that you need a bigger pocket; it's a bit too big for most shirt pockets. But a coat pocket or fanny pack would be fine, or a small purse.I would tend to think that this map would be somewhat fragile, in that the quick opening and closing is dependent on the folds remaining in good shape. You can't really flatten the map out without running the risk of making it hard to fold up again.In any case, this map is a good choice for someone who wants a quick reference for a summer day when they're only carrying a few items and no jacket.
Oh the agony of obsolescence- seems these maps are no longer printed since everyone has maps on their phones now, but I love them! They fit in your pocket, are a visual joy to read/lots of landmarks noted, and you don't have to worry about your phone charge/fees/light condition/coverage. I think of a city I want to visit, scrounge a pop-type map (two companies used to make these) and plan my trip from there. My first map was an abbreviated one from a convention in SF over 15 yrs ago- the elegance and efficiency of the origami fold is unsurpassed.
All the PopOut maps are elegantly designed, giving you the key info you need in a form that isn't so large that it will blow away when you try to read it on a windy day. I'm most familiar with the Washington DC map, since I live nearby, and rely on it whenever I go to the District or take the Metro to an unfamiliar place. I've used PopOut maps of other cities, and found them equally helpful. If you want a gift that's not too expensive, this is a good choice.
Popout maps have become my go-to map when exploring a city I'm unfamiliar with. Fit in my back pocket, and have all the important landmarks and attractions. I leave all the other maps at home.
Recently visited Washington DC. This popout map of the city was so handy during my stay in our nation's capital! I loved DC and I loved this handy pocket-sized map showing everything I needed to see when I needed to see it. Highly recommend!
